Freshwater Pearl is a gem of organic origin composed essentially of calcium carbonate called also mother of pearl, and a protein substance (conchioline), arranged in concentric layers; is produced by the biological activity of different bivalve molluscs that live in river or lake environments, but the main producer is the genus Hyriopsis.

The formation of pearls can take place spontaneously for natural causes, but it is a rare event; currently in the breeding of perliferic molluscs artificial processes simulate natural events to have a production of pearls in large quantities.

The colour of the pearls is mainly due to organic pigments.
