Description
The i is a mineral that belongs to the group of silicates (silicate of magnesium and aluminum), of violet blue colour, in fact the iolite name comes from the greek on, i mean violet. It is also known by the name of cordieri, in honor of the French geologist Pierre-Louis-Antoine Cordier
Iolite is also called “dicroite” (from Greek) do chróo “two colors”) due tointense pleocroism that this gem presents, visible even without the help of tools.
Crystallizes in the rombique system, with a hardness between 7 and 7.5, density between 2.57 and 2.66, and refractive indices between 1,542 and 1,551.
Iolite is mainly located in the peninsula scandinavian (Sweden, Finland and Norway), Madagascar, Sri Lanka.
