Description
The iolite is a mineral that belongs to the silicate group (magnesium and aluminum silicate), violet blue color, in fact the name Iolite derives from the Greek theon, that is violet. It is also known as the name cordierite, in honor of the French geologist Pierre-Louis-Antoine Cordier
Iolite is also called "dichroite" (from the Greek ofyor CHRorOS "Two colors") due to theintense pleocroism that this gem has, visible even without the aid of instruments.
It crystallizes in the rhodomic system, with hardness between 7 and 7.5, density between 2.57 and 2.66, and refractive indices between 1.542 and 1.551.
Iolite is located mainly in the peninsula Scandinavian (Sweden, Finland and Norway), in Madagascar, in Sri Lanka.
